SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PENNY ROMANIA 2020 20/132 PENNY is the only food retailer that supports the most popular sport in Romania - football, for all the age groups, all formats (including Futsal) and all genres (including women's football). In our endeavor to promote sport and its benefits, we partnered with the Romanian Football Federation since 2016. In 2020, we continued this collaboration and we expanded our support, including food for athletes. In 2020, we funded the research study “Study on the trade balance with agri-food products in Romania over the 2015-2020 period” [2] conducted by the Academy of Economic Studies from Bucharest. The project’s coordinator was Mrs. Conf. Univ. Dr. Simona Roxana Pătărlăgeanu who, together with his research team, identified vulnerabilities regarding Romania's trade balance with food and made recommendations for her recovery. It is noteworthy that, in 2019, Romania’s trade balance was tilted in favor of imports to the detriment of exports of agri-food products. Regarding the evolution of the trade deficit with agri-food products, in the five years analysis, the highest average growth rate of the deficit was registered in category 16, meat preparations, of about 42% annually. With an average increase of 22%, the alcoholic beverages category occupies the second place, followed by cereal-based prepared products, with 16%. The category 13, plant extracts, has the slowest average growth rate, 2%. The content of the research was published by the ASE publishing house under ISBN no. 9786063403552 and indexed in CEEOL, thus joining the approximately 5,000 volumes available on the Central and Eastern European Online Library. The book is available online and is part of the specialized literature of the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies and can be accessed online by both academics and students from ASE or from other universities in Romania. Furthermore, the content of the research became teaching material for a series of departments within ASE Bucharest. One conclusion of the study notes: “It is neither opportune nor enough to increase the export of raw materials (cereals, alive animals). On the contrary, a slowdown is requiredon the increase in imports, by creating a favorable environment for local business and by financing local processors of agri-food products. Thus, the production of local agri-food products is stimulated and would improve the negative effects of the trade deficit." We are glad that we were able to actively contribute to the research and education segment by funding this study. It will help us to balance our commercial activities in the coming years and it also confirms that our efforts to increase the share of locally produced varieties meet the need for the development and support of the Romanian economy.
