SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PENNY ROMANIA 2020 54/132 Fruits and vegetables PENNY strives to ensure that Romanian fruit and vegetables can be found on the shelves for a long period of time. The main challenges related to this goal are associated to the high degree of perishability and low availability of products. We know that well organization is key to achieving this goal and we have developed an efficient storage process for perishable products. It involves customizing storage methods according to the specifications of each product. We ensured that bulk potatoes, rooted celery, bulk carrots, garlic and yellow onions are available on our shelves 12 months a year, by finding a collaborator who can ensure their storage in optimal conditions. We have adopted similar measures in the case of tomatoes and apples, where storage conditions are even stricter. From year to year, we can see the progress we are making in keeping these products on the shelf for extended periods. Our suppliers are strong allies in this endeavor and we enjoy the strong collaboration we have with them. The most important aspects that we have in mind in relation to the suppliers of fruit and vegetables cover both the part of the quantity produced and the part of preferred assortments by Romanians. Thus, through firm purchase promises made at the beginning of the crops, we ensure the need for these products, and the producers are sure they have a buyer. PENNY's involvement turned to be very suitable even in the technological processes performed by the producers, through the support offered in terms of treating the products or even the purchasing the seedlings. At the same time, we provide our employees with qualified people to help them apply specific treatments for each product - such as pest control. We consider this involvement very important for the longevity of our suppliers, but also for the safety of the quantities we rely on. Our strategy for the next five years includes actions aimed at improving storage methods for fruit andvegetables.Weknowthat this is the solution to increase the availability on the shelf of as many product categories as possible. Thus, we managed to ensure the presence of roots on the shelf for 12 months a year and we want to achieve similar performance for as many products from the fruit and vegetables category as possible.
