EXPLAINING THE IMPACT Global warming brings a negative impact on both individuals and businesses. Extreme weather events and deteriorating air quality are just a few examples of how it can affect our activities and put our health at risk. Protecting the climate should be a priority for all businesses and individuals, not just a moral obligation. By the very nature of our business, energy consumption is the main aspect influencing our direct emissions into the atmosphere. Energy consumption is a key issue in our industry, with a direct impact on operational processes from refrigeration and lighting to the operation of IT systems that ensure the integrity of the retail business. Thus, efficient energy management has a positive impact on our company by lowering operational costs, while contributing to climate protection and reducing negative impacts on the environment. HOW WE CONTROL THE IMPACT We continue to monitor energy consumption and emissions from our operations using various tools and methodologies, such as the Global Emissions Model for Integrated Systems (GEMIS), a tool that calculates GHG emissions, resource use and full life-cycle costs for a variety of fuel chains. In order to be able to effectively monitor and manage energy consumption, we are implementing and further developing our energy management system according to ISO 50001, for which we have been certified since 2017. In doing so, we demonstrate good energy efficiency management, implementation of sustainable best practices and compliance with relevant legislation, which has enabled us to provide a good foundation on which to build energy performance and contribute to climate protection. Our Energy Policy plays an important role in laying this foundation, setting the groundwork for the development of energy efficiency targets and directions for action. Energy efficiency is ensured by specialized teams, coordinated by the Energy Manager, who make recommendations to improve energy efficiency by checking and analyzing energy consumption. OUR IMPACT AND PERFORMANCE IN FIGURES z Expansion of the photovoltaic network in the stores: 12 new systems installed by the end of the year, work started on another 12 systems, 20 more systems with a capacity of 1 800 kWp to be built z 100% of our newly opened stores benefit from a new lighting concept that reduces electricity consumption by approximately 35% per year compared to a conventional LED system z 100% of our stores are served by a new, more efficient energy metering system, which involves managing data in a dedicated energy efficiency portal z 100% of our stores have been equipped with doors on the refrigerated display cases z 100% replacement of R404a refrigerant in our installations with a refrigerant with a lower global warming potential (GWP) z 100% of our own stores are equipped with electric heat pumps z Exceeding the target of 12% reduction in average electricity consumption/m² sales area by 2022, compared to the baseline year 2012 (consumption reduced by 29%) Objectives met z 23% reduction in CO2/m² emissions for all store formats by 2022 compared to 2012 base year z 12% reduction in average electricity consumpti- on/m² sales area by 2022, compared to the 2012 baseline year CLIMATE PROTECTION SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PENNY ROMANIA 2022 136/250 SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY ABOUT US AND OUR VALUE CHAIN THE FUTURE IS MADE TODAY SUSTAINABILITY HIGHLIGHTS MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTORS CONTENTS SUSTAINABILITY STEP BY STEP
