Răzvan NAȘCU Project manager Refrigeration systems Refrigeration Refrigeration activity remains the main energy consumer in our large-scale operations. Thus, we have continued to implement measures to optimize consumption in this category, the main one including: use of glass doors for dairy shelves and freezers, optimization of glass doors, modernization of refrigeration system technology, replacement of energy-efficient refrigeration systems and display cabinets, optimization of operating procedures. In 2022, we continued the replacement of the refrigeration systems to ensure a higher efficiency for these installations. With the increase in refrigeration requirements, we are continuing to make every effort to ensure that we also increase the related energy consumption proportionately. This year we have also continued the initiatives started in previous years, the most important ones remaining the fitting of refrigerated display cabinets with doors and the modernization of refrigeration systems at store level. Thus, by the end of 2022, 100% of our fresh produce display cases had doors fitted to reduce the associated energy consumption. At the same time, the development of new consumption reduction measures depends on a detailed analysis of existing consumption patterns. For this reason, we equipped all our stores with remote monitoring systems for refrigeration installations. In this way, we will be able to analyze current patterns and create correlations with other factors influencing possible increases in consumption. In 2022, we upgraded the cooling systems for 20 of our stores by completely replacing the central and display units. At the same time, we have continued the measures started in previous years, including the replacement of R404a refrigerant with one with a lower GWP (global warming potential), reaching 100% replacement by the end of 2022. In order to further develop feasible and successful measures for energy efficiency and climate impact reduction in the refrigeration business, we set strategic goals and targets year by year. Thus, for 2023 we are pursuing the "We are cool with CO2" strategy, whereby we aim to have 80% of the newly opened stores equipped with refrigeration systems running on natural CO2 refrigerant and to continue to completely upgrade the refrigeration systems in 10 more stores. Therefore, we continue to seek the reduction in usage of refrigerants that have a significant impact on the climate and to identify feasible alternatives to enable us to carry out our activities efficiently. In 2022, we conducted two more trials to replace freon in refrigeration installations with the natural refrigerant CO2 or Propane R290. We plan to completely replace cooling solutions with natural refrigerant with GWP 1 or Propane R290, with GWP below 20 for premises which are leased, where the location does not allow the installation of the standard solution. Plug-in refrigeration units to be used in all new and refurbished stores in the future will run on propane (R290), a natural refrigerant. In order to optimize refrigerant consumption in the warehouses, we have developed a strategy to replace 60% of the existing installation in the Ștefăneștii de Jos warehouse, which is supplied with Freon R449. The new installation will use the natural refrigerant CO2.
