Through our training and wellbeing programmes, we provide our employees opportunities for professional and personal development. The positive social impact is also influenced by the inclusive and equitable opportunities we offer. In this way, we contribute to and meet the needs and expectations of our employees. As part of our business, employees are involved in the processes of sorting goods and selecting waste. Failure to comply with internal procedures can negatively influence both the quantities of waste generated and its disposal or subsequent treatment cost. Potentially negative influences can also arise from employees' mismanagement of energy-consuming equipment, installations, machinery or vehicles. Social responsibility Through our involvement in social projects internally and externally we contribute to the economic well-being of community stakeholders, whether through our education projects, environmental awareness, sports or even through direct support of local communities. A supported and developed community will be able to confidently choose from the variety of local and regional products we offer in our stores, thus positively influencing our business. By collaborating with and supporting NGOs with whom we share common values, we strengthen community spirit and extend the reach of our projects in order to have the widest possible positive social impact when it comes to beneficiaries from different territories or social backgrounds. The stability and development of our business depends on ensuring a high level of well-being in the communities in which we operate. With the CSR projects launched in the community (internal and external) especially those related to environmental awareness (but not limited to these) we contribute both directly and indirectly to mitigating the environmental impact in local communities. Local communities We provide financial support in areas such as infrastructure, urban development and sports activities. This focus leads to long-term partnerships that benefit all parties involved. We are actively involved in sports infrastructure, energy infrastructure (electric charging stations, renewable energy installations) and green infrastructure (on buildings and beyond). These bring multiple social benefits to beneficiaries in different communities. By developing green and energy infrastructure, we create value by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Throughout the development of specific projects, we are aware that we may have a potential negative impact, so this is controlled through specific processes and procedures well put in place throughout implementation. Education and awareness Investing in the practical training of young people facilitates their integration into the labor market, including the opportunity to become our colleagues. In this way we create new jobs and new employment opportunities for those who develop through the programmes we offer. We encourage dual education and offer support to students with limited means through school supplies, scholarships and internship programmes for professional development. In this way we create a positive impact by educating and developing people who have this need and contributing to their quality of life. To make sustainability a widely adopted principle in society, well-educated customers are needed. Thus, environmental concerns are and will continue to be integrated into purchasing decisions. Our customers will be able to choose from a range of appropriately labelled certified products, and their purchasing decision will add environmental value. Food waste management Food waste contributes significantly to increased costs, both for us and for our customers and suppliers. That's why we pay attention to our internal purchasing, storage and handling procedures, so as to significantly reduce product and therefore economic losses for both our organization and our customers. The amount of food that becomes waste on our sites represents a direct financial loss to our company. Likewise, food waste directly negatively affects our economic performance. Our customers and employees are concerned about reducing food waste. Through our internal processes we try to make maximum use of those hierarchical levels for perishable products so that they do not become waste. We therefore work with food banks and donate food in good time so that it can be used safely, contributing to a positive social impact. As one of the topics of great international concern, food waste has a negative impact on society by creating deprivation for disadvantaged populations. Access to food is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, and food wastage means depriving certain segments of the population of this right. Food waste has negative consequences for the environment through waste generation and unnecessary consumption of raw materials. Food waste that is not collected for recovery through composting is a major source of pollution. We manage perishable products through internal processes that comply with legislation. We continuously work to reduce food waste through food donation options to food banks or organizations that deal with the recovery of food waste into biogas.
