SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PENNY ROMANIA 2020 116/132 Food waste management We are concerned about the phenomenon of food waste and we make sustained efforts to reduce the amount of food that can become waste. Among the most important, actively used strategies, we can also mention the efficient management of stocks in stores and warehouses, the system of discounts offered in stores, the collaborations with food banks, as well as the struggle to identify alternatives to avoid food that is no longer suitable for human consumption to reach the landfills. This phenomenon concerns us as a direct result of our basic activity, the retail one, but also from the perspective of the members of the value chain, from producers, suppliers to consumers. We are constantly investing human and financial resources to reduce the amount of food wasted, from suppliers toourwarehouses and fromour stores tocustomers. A responsible approach to food waste also means taking into account the ways in which society's awareness can be raised by launching campaigns and activities dedicated to it. Reducing food waste resulting from the company's operations Food waste has a major impact on climate change, and reducing it is one of our goals. To put this into perspective, in 2020 we formed the international “Food Save” team, made up of experts and representatives from the countries where the REWE Group operates. The main objective of the team is to identify solutions to reduce food waste, by analyzing the causes and challenges that occur throughout the supply chain. To find out the exact quantities of food that can become waste along the entire supply chain, we started working on creating a database that would allow us a better perspective on where and how quantities of food are generated that can become waste.
