SUSTAINABILITY REPORT PENNY ROMANIA 2020 117/132 WE ARE AWARE On the occasion of International Food Waste Awareness Day, we wanted to raise awareness of the importance of changing the way food is produced and consumed. WE WORK IN A TEAM We set up a dedicated internal team, which deals with the development and implementation of the strategy to reduce food waste, as well as the most efficient planning of stocks in stores and warehouses. WE AVOIDWASTE One difficulty we face is the food surplus in stores. To limit the amount of food, we created a system of discounts offered only in the store. Discounts are offered to products in surplus or approaching the expiration date. This strategy helps to accelerate the sale of selected products, and thus we manage to support our customers and minimize the amount of products thrown away. The quality and long-lasting freshness of the food is ensured by equipping the display cases with doors, using IFCO boxes and using an adequate transport logistics service, through which the temperature during transport is constantly monitored. It is made on short routes as our products are coming from regional sources. To achieve our goal, we have developed a plan based on the following pillars: • Maximizing the redistribution of food surplus to food banks • Creating initiatives in the store - accelerated sales • Optimized the inventory process and the use of solutions based on Artificial Intelligence - automatically generated commands • Promoting innovative solutions to address hot spots • Using surplus food as animal feed or energy source • Developed systems to improve the visibility of the cause / area of food waste generation and, last but not least, the reporting of food waste SOCIAL IMPACT Our customers and colleagues are concerned about reducing food waste ECONOMIC IMPACT Food waste contributes significantly to increased costs, both for us and for our customers and suppliers ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT We can reduce the impact on the environment, reducing the consumption of natural resources and, implicitly, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases associated with the processes of production, transport or waste management.
