Food Risk Management EXPLAINING THE IMPACT Reducing food waste is a priority for PENNY Romania, as it is one of the most significant global issues in terms of negative impact on society and the environment. Food waste refers to the situation where commercially traded food is discarded or lost before it reaches the consumer. Companies in the food retail industry are, from this perspective, the main actors responsible for managing this issue, due to the role they play in the distribution and the sale of these products. Reducing food waste is not only a moral and legal obligation, but also a way to generate positive economic, social and environmental impacts. Through operational activities, we actively engage in well-established processes that lead to the reduction of food waste considering the waste hierarchy and the prevention of food waste. OUR IMPACT AND PERFORMANCE IN FIGURES We are continuously investing in human resources and financial resources to reduce the amount of food wasted, from our suppliers to our warehouses and from our stores to our customers. In 2022, the local team responsible for implementing Food Waste Reduction Plan, has been active, working on the 15 specific measures identified in previous years. As a result, by analyzing the processes and challenges occurring throughout the supply chain, solutions to reduce food waste have been implemented in 4 action areas: z Reducing food waste in the framework of our operations; z Donating the surplus food to charitable organisations; z Diverting food that is no longer appropriate for human consumption; z Consumer education through awareness campaigns. HOW WE CONTROL THE IMPACT Reducing food waste is a complex issue for us, given the fact that it is a direct result of our primary line of work, retail, as well as the other participants in our value chain, from producers and suppliers to consumers. Therefore, it is always at the center of our daily pre-occupations. We work hard to reduce the amount of food that can become waste, by: z the most efficient stock planning in our warehouses and stores; z the discount system offered in store; z collaborations with food banks; z Identifying alternatives so that food that is no longer fit for human consumption does not end up in landfills.
