Sustainability Report 2023

Regional products People are increasingly aware of the benefits of buying directly from local producers. Choosing the right supplier is crucial to the prosperity of our business. We opt for regional sourcing, benefiting from its advantages, through the four logistics centers that facilitate the distribution of products to all our points of sale. This method of supply helps to reduce the carbon footprint and gas emissions. Our relationship with our suppliers are solid and reliable. We carry out periodic visits to the locations where our goods are produced and shipped, thus ensuring increased control over their evolution and quality. Consumers are showing a growing interest in purchasing food labelled as 'local products' or 'regional products'. In the absence of formal definitions clarifying the meaning of the terms 'regional' and 'local', the proliferation of these labels in the food industry can lead to confusion and mislead shoppers. Day by day, we choose to collaborate with those suppliers who share our vision and values. We aim to build strong partnerships and positive relationships with suppliers who are fiscally registered in Romania, whom we consider local suppliers*. Purchasing locally is another strength and another priority objective of ours. When we buy local products, we support the national economy by creating jobs, maintaining added value in regional economies. It also leads to a reduction in carbon emissions by reducing the distance that products must be transported to reach consumers, thus reducing their impact on the environment. * local supplier = an organization or a person that supplies a product or service to the reporting organization and that is based in the same geographic market as the reporting organization (in the case of PENNY, local, in relation to the merchandise supplier, is the equivalent of the geographic market – Romania; the tax registration of suppliers considered local must be done by the National Trade Register Office of Romania). In addition, sourcing from local suppliers allows us to perform better quality control and develop stronger relationships with suppliers. By working closely with local manufacturers, we can monitor the production process in detail and ensure that the products are of the highest quality. In addition, the proximity of local suppliers allows us to quickly solve any problems that may arise, such as problems related to delivery or product quality. Based on the monetary value of purchases, 86% of our suppliers of goods are local, which means that they operate in Romania.
