Sustainability Report 2023

Management of food waste resulting from PENNY operations To prevent the excessive accumulation of food products in our stores, we rely on advanced forecasting technologies and implement automated ordering systems. Moreover, thanks to our effective inventory management policies and the in-depth knowledge of our qualified staff, we can predict the supply requirements of the stores, thus avoiding the storage of additional products. We are continuously improving our operations, with priority given to end-to-end inventory planning. We are in control of the supply chain by automating, streamlining and simplifying complex inventory optimization processes to achieve the highest possible availability with as little stock as possible. The priority for us is to have an integrated end-to-end inventory planning. We implemented AI-based forecasting and digital twin modeling to predict customer demand in each store, anticipate inventory requirements across the PENNY network, and improve logistics center inventory visibility to ensure optimal sourcing. We automatically monitor stock and order levels in near real-time and respond quickly to requests by triggering regular calls to our suppliers. We have continued to optimize the way food is fresh: z we carefully monitor expiration dates. z we plan short transport routes between logistics centers and stores, almost all our products being of regional origin. z fresh products are transported using IFCO crates. z we use a logistics service with refrigerated vehicles, the temperature being monitored and controlled from production to the shelf. z in stores, colling cabinets are equipped with doors to keep products at the optimal temperature. z we train employees regularly, thus managing to keep losses to a minimum. In each store, our employees constantly monitor the products, their quantities and their shelf life. If a product has a limited shelf life, we can reduce the price by up to 80%, depending on the product category, and arrange the display of these discounted items to attract customers' attention. 2020 2021 2022 2023 Food waste avoided (tons) 1 770 1 334 452 2 209 Accelerated Sale In addition, we support as a partner the bonapp.eco application, which aims to combat food waste, by connecting consumers with retailers that offer food with guaranteed quality, but which are approaching the expiration date. Through this app, our customers can benefit from discounts of up to 50% for PENNY product bundles listed. This strategy helps to accelerate the sale of selected products, and thus we manage to support our customers with food products at advantageous prices and limit the number of products thrown away. In 2023, we sold more than 2 200 surprise packages, saving 7.3 tons of food, almost tripling the amount in 2022.
