We have been monitoring the amount of food waste generated since 2020 and implement our own methodology to quantify the impact on the climate by quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the production of food and related packaging, the emissions generated (or avoided) by eliminating or recovering the food and packaging and the emissions generated by transporting the food to its destination. Due to the complexity of the product portfolio, the methodology involves a statistical approach, with the aim of tracking the progress of the measures implemented for food waste management. We report the quantities and emissions of greenhouse gases to the annual turnover of REWE (România) S.R.L. to be able to follow the evolution of the food waste situation in the context of the company's evolution. Thus, the amount of food waste in relation to the turnover for food products decreased by 4% compared to 2020. The proportion of food waste avoided (through fasttrack sales or donations to regional food banks) as a ratio of food turnover increased by 234% compared to 2020, while the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions avoided as a ratio of food turnover increased by 61% compared to 2020.
