Luana's Dream Foundation – Rescue and rehabilitation of native wild animals in Bucharest and Ilfov Budget: 185 490 lei The project aimed at rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing native wild animals, as well as educating the community about coexistence with urban fauna. Main results: • 2 769 animals from 142 species hospitalized and treated, plus a colony of 3 339 bats. • Release rate of 58% of animals (88% in bats). • Expansion of the team and infrastructure (45 new accommodation spaces), 20% increase in calls answered and 33% increase in cases handled daily. • Over 720 students and 30 teachers from 18 schools involved in 34 educational activities. • Legislative proposal to amend Law 205/2004 on the protection of animals, in order to clarify the status of rehabilitation centers. The project has contributed to increasing the visibility of the topic of urban fauna in the media, to the formation of an active online community and to the recognition of the center as a source of forensic expertise and support for the authorities. However, the team points out the need to increase organizational capacity – financially, operationally and educationally – to cope with the growing number of cases. Wilderness Research and Conservation Association – BatWatch Budget: 130 000 lei The project aims to reduce the human impact on bat colonies in Bucharest and Ilfov, through monitoring, rescue, rehabilitation and environmental education actions. Main results: • Visible increase in public awareness and empathy towards bats in urban areas. • Involving citizens through notifications, setting up monitoring devices and participating in educational activities. • Advocacy activities that led to external pressure for legislative changes, including the suspension of some European funding for enveloping works in which bats were affected. • Educational activities carried out in schools, nature tours and bioacoustics sessions in parks, presentations at the Bucharest Science Festival and at the National Conference of Chiropterology. The project generated increased interest from the local and international press, mobilized the community and opened difficult but necessary dialogues with local authorities.
