Energy efficiency IMPACT EXPLANATION Energy consumption is a basic aspect in retail industry, and influences all operational processes from the supply and storage of products to the management of sales areas. PENNY mainly uses energy for refrigeration and lightning in its stores and logistics centres. The efficient management of energy consumption helps to reduce the environmental impact of our company and to optimise the administrative costs. Therefore, energy efficiency represents a material aspect which affects our entire activity and substantially helps to achieve our sustainability goals. HOWWE MANAGE THE IMPACT We constantly make efforts to ensure the energy efficiency of our entire activity. From the ISO 50001:2018-certified energy management system, implemented from 2017, to specific actions for improving the energy efficiency in the short and long run, we managed to develop more and more efficient measures and to reduce the operational costs, at the same time. In this regard, the increase of energy performances requires that the entire team commits to the monitoring, optimisation and correct implementation of all measures taken. Dedicated administrative teams coordinated by an Energy Manager are in charge of this aspect, but we make sure that all our colleagues from stores, offices and warehouses understand and contribute to our energy performance goals. One of the main duties of the Energy Manager is to check and examine the consumption based on the data collected through the online and offline systems, in order to make recommendations for the continuous improvement of the energy optimisation measures. These can range from optimisation of lightning and cooling, heating or ventilation systems to re-technologization and modernisation of equipment. OUR IMPACT AND PERFORMANCE IN FIGURES We decreased our energy consumption per functional unit. Energy efficiency actions and projects continue to add value to both the environment and the economy. Even though the number of stores has risen, and the total quantity of consumed energy has increased, the intensity of energy consumption with respect to the area of served premises has decreased. The driving forces behind this improvement were the use of LED lightning, a more energy-efficient refrigeration and the construction of new more energy-efficient stores. Generally, this success reflects the efficiency of energy management systems implemented. We continue to work in order to increase energy efficiency as part of a continuous improvement process. Energy consumption includes electricity (consumed by PENNY stores, logistics centres, headquarters, as well as tenants), in particular the power used for refrigeration and lightning, and energy sources for heating the premises. The energy intensity covers the use of electric and thermic energy by location (gas, GPL, diesel fuel and district heating).
