Lightning Lightning is responsible for approximatively 20%of the electricity consumption in PENNY stores. The use of LED lightning played a key role in reducing electricity consumption per square meter of sales area in the last years. Since the end of 2019, all PENNY stores and logistics centres were equipped with LED lightning. In the last years, the LED lightning systems improved considerably in respect of light colour and lifetime. All our new construction projects use LED lightning concepts. Refrigeration Whereas the refrigeration systems represent one of the largest energy consumers in our industry, we continue to work with a view to mitigating the impact of this activity. In PENNY stores, refrigeration is responsible for almost half of electricity consumption. As the fresh product range extends in our stores, so does the refrigeration need, therefore, in the framework of our remodelling, the line of refrigerated display cases has increased by 25%. Within the reporting period, our objective was to not raise the energy consumption, despite the fact that our need for cold ambient has increased. The most important measures taken were: z equipping the display cases for fresh products with doors z optimisation/modernisation of cold system's technology z replacement of refrigeration systems older than 10 years In order to meet the refrigeration needs, we relied upon the purchase of energy efficient equipment. At the end of 2021, the display cases of 80% of PENNY's network were equipped with doors, which resulted in a 7% higher energy efficiency of this type of stores by reference to the others, thus reducing the average store consumption by 27 kWh / m². Another key factor for a highly efficient refrigeration system is the regular maintenance and the professional management of the refrigeration system. These systems can be energy efficient only if the refrigeration equipment is optimally operated. In 2021, during our remodelling, we replaced the entire refrigeration system in 22 stores. Digitalisation and innovation Whereas the correct consumption monitoring is the first step towards energy optimisation, we have continued the innovation process by digitalisation. At the end of the year, 100% of our stores were remotely monitored compared to 25% in the previous year. The remote monitoring network also apply to refrigeration systems, and, at the end of 2021, we have included 60% of the entire refrigeration infrastructure in this system. Photovoltaic panels As a responsible business, we try tominimise the environmental impact of our premises, such as reducing the pressure on the conventional energy system. Our goal is to be market leaders in the field of energy efficiency of food retail and to meet stakeholders’ expectations concerning sustainable investment. In 2021, we have continued to extend the photovoltaic panel system and to implement alternative energies at our premises. PENNY ended the year 2021 operating photovoltaic systems in 50 stores and 2 logistics centres, located in 24 counties.
