We direct surplus food to charities! In order to reduce food waste, PENNY is the partner of the Regional Food Banks in several regions of the country. We work with the Oradea Regional Food Bank and the Cluj Regional Food Bank. 31 associated stores over 82,5 tone of food products donated over 25 000 euro sponsorship to the Romanian Federation of Food Banks We divert the foods which are no longer appropriate for human consumption! In the case of foods no longer suitable for consumption, we focus on the identification of alternatives so that they do not reach thewaste dumps. A solution implemented in 2021 was their transformation to biogas. Thus, we implemented a pilot project whereby fruits and vegetables that could no longer be sold in PENNY stores were collected separately on site and handed over to an authorized collector for delivery to a biogas production station, where the quantities were subjected anaerobic digestion process. The pilot project was implemented in 5 PENNY stores in the country, through which we diverted 104 tons of fruit and vegetables from disposal.
